- In line with the decision to power all the Group's Italian sites with renewable energy from 2019, ABB has signed an agreement with Enel X to install a photovoltaic plant at the Smart Power plant in Frosinone
- Once fully operational, the plant will be able to contribute approximately 30% of the energy needs of the production site
Rome/Frosinone, June 23rd, 2022 - A new partnership between ABB, Enel X, Enel's global business line dedicated to innovative services, and Cogenio, the energy efficiency services platform, has begun, with the planned installation of a 1,690 kWp photovoltaic facility at ABB's Frosinone plant. The site, like all ABB Group facilities in Italy, is already powered by renewable energy supplied by Enel Energia. The installation of the plant will avoid the emission of more than 820 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, equivalent to the amount absorbed by a forest of around 9,000 trees. Enel X will build and manage the solar park for the entire duration of the Energy Performance Contract together with its ESCo partner Cogenio. Under the Energy Power Contract formula, the investment for the plant's construction and operation is fully borne by the ESCo company. The customer will only pay for the energy vectors produced by the plant itself, with a lower energy bill than before the works.
"With our advanced technology solutions in the energy efficiency field, we offer our customers the opportunity to achieve their challenging business sustainability goals," said Augusto Raggi, Head of Enel X Italia. "And it is precisely in this area that our partnership with ABB has developed over the years and is now expanding with the installation of a photovoltaic plant that will allow us to electrify part of the consumption of the Frosinone site, one of the company's most important. We want to maintain our position as a partner of choice in this sector and today's agreement is proof of our daily commitment to consolidate this status.”
"This project is part of the sustainability strategy announced by the ABB Group, which envisages Carbon Neutrality of its operations by 2030. Our road towards this goal is well mapped out,” said Massimiliano Cifalitti, Hub Europe Manager ABB Electrification Smart Power. “Last year saw Frosinone achieve its target of zero waste being sent to landfill. The installation of the photovoltaic plant is part of a broader plan to build a microgrid that, thanks to ABB's electricity distribution monitoring and optimizing technology and an energy storage system, will increase the production site's energy self-sufficiency.”
The photovoltaic plant to be built by Enel X will allow ABB to self-produce energy volumes that will meet around 30% of the entire site's energy needs. Opened in 1969, the Frosinone plant is ABB's Center of Excellence for the development and production of low-voltage circuit breakers. The 150,000 square meter factory with its 1,000 employees is highly automated and produces more than three million circuit breakers each year. Recognized by the Italian government as a Lighthouse plant, a model for digital transformation and Industry 4.0 strategies, Frosinone has developed smart, digitized and connected operations, increasing efficiency throughout its value chain.
