Work to develop a new public parking for the hospital started last March 2022. What will make this amenity unique is that it will be the first in the Balearic islands to be covered with photovoltaic panels. The system developed by Enel X, covering 15,000 m2 (equivalent to 161,458 square feet), will contribute to diminish the structure’s management costs and its environmental impact.
The client
The Mateu Orfila General hospital is the main health center on the island of Minorca and it is located in Mahon, the most eastern municipality of Spain. It was inaugurated in 2007 and it substituted the old health structure Virgen de Toro. The hospital has an availability of over 100 beds and it is the health center of reference for more than 90.000 people.

160 K
€ of energy savings per year
The hospital aimed at improving its energy efficiency, reducing its energy costs and reaching the set goals in terms of emissions, sustainability and resilience.
Enel X’s project consists of covering the public parking with 15,000 m2 of photovoltaic panels capable of producing a peak kilowatt renewable power of 976 (kWp). The solution will contribute to the energy needs of the health center through a system of energy self-production and consumption, thereby diminishing the costs and emissions.
The systems, once in place, will be able to provide 20% of the energy needed for the hospital’s functioning, diminishing emissions and contributing to the net zero emissions goal through electrification. Thanks to energy self-production, the hospital will become more independent from an energy perspective, with a saving of approximately 160,000 euro per year on energy expenditure.
